Honey harvest is right around the corner

Honey harvest is right around the corner

This photo is from August 15 from our NE Iowa apiary. The “prize” hive is on the far left. The workers there have been drawing out wax so nice and fast the past couple months, plus hauling in the nectar. These are all new colonies from packages, as this is the first year we are keeping hives in this location on my folks’ property. So many of the boxes were starting with empty plastic frames. It is a great spot though, and I’m hoping to have additional colonies here in 2016.

We plan to harvest on Sept 6 and then extract Sept 8-9. That is coming right up!

The bees are still busy drawing out the wax in this top box just lifted up…

A whole lot of bees were hanging on the bottom…had to be careful to avoid squashing them.

Jana checking on the progress of another hive.

Little Aidan passed out on a wheel-barrow ride with grandpa while we were checking the hives 🙂
